TASK IV

Critical lens Essay

According to author Samuel John son, "Literature is a kind of intelectual light which like the light of the sun, may sometime enable us to see what we do not like." In my opinion it means that writings is a type of intelectual light which like the light of the sun, sometimes do not let us see what we don't like. I do not always agree with this statement. In the story The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the plot of this story is about a girl named Esperanza. She is living in a Latino Section. She describes everything as she sees them; she talks about how she doesn't like her name, her house and other things. She also says how people is scared to enter neighborhood but don't want to realize it. She does know that they are scared. She also notices the stupidity of her sister Rachel. She is very realistic and sees how other people think and believe and sees when they are right or wrong. She tells how their lives are. For example she describes a girl named Marin, who doesn't obey the people she is living with and is saying that she is getting marry with her boyfriend in Puerto Rico. Esperanza is able to see that Marin is not doing the right thing. This story makes me think that the statement is no t always right.
